20 January 1885 Were you aware that a former Vice President of the United Stats died here in Blue Earth County?
Schuyler Colfax, Ulysses S. Grant's vice president, was traveling through Mankato by train and arrived at the Omaha depot. He walked from there to the Milwaukee depot through snow drifts in bitter cold so severe that even weather acclimated residents were taking pains to stay inside. He arrived at the Milwaukee Depot, sat on a bench, and slumped to the floor. A doctor arrived and declared him dead at the scene. The city sent a delegation of men with the body, and they were met by a delegacies in Chicago who took his body the rest of the way home to South Bend, Indiana. Colfax, a die-hard Odd Fellow, had been traveling in South Dakota in an attempt to found new lodges for that order.
