Countdown to 2018: 3 Family Recipes

Recipes are often handed down through the generations and connect us to the past through traditions, tastes and smells.

Below are 3 family recipes from cookbooks found in the archives of the Blue Earth County Historical Society. Help preserve these books and many more with a donation to the Society today. 

Mom’s Rhubarb Cake

1 ½ c. brown sugar
½ c. Crisco
1 egg
1 c. sour milk
½ c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. soda
2 c. flour
2 c. rhubarb
½ c. nuts

Mix sugar, Crisco, egg, milk, vanilla, soda and flour together; add rhubarb last. Put into a creased 9x13-inch pan. Top with sugar, nuts, cinnamon; sprinkle over cake. Bake in a 350º over for 30 to 35 minutes. Serve with Cool Whip.


Grandpa’s Popcorn Balls

5 qts. popped corn
2 c. sugar
1 ½ c. water
½ tsp. salt
½ c. light corn syrup
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. vinegar

Keep popcorn hot and crisp in a slow oven (300 to 325º). Cook sugar, water, salt, and corn syrup to very hard ball stage (260º). Add vinegar and vanilla. Cook to light crack stage (280º). Pour slowly over popcorn; mix well to coat every popcorn kernel. Press into balls (use “fat” on hands or water on hands) – need to work quickly. Yield: 20 popcorn balls.


Great Grandma’s Molasses Cookies

¾ c. shortening
1 c. sugar
¼ c. molasses (dark)
1 egg
2 tsp. baking soda
2 c. sifted flour
½ tsp. cloves
½ tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
½ tsp. salt

Melt shortening in 3 or 4 quart pan over low heat; let cool. Add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well. Sift together rest of ingredients and add to first mixture. Mix well; chill. Form in 1 inch balls. Roll in sugar and place on greased cookie sheets 2 inches apart. Bake in 375º oven 8 to 10 minutes.
