Building Cornice

This is a cornice from 414 South Front Street.   Cornices are the overhanging panels that give a finishing touch to the building.  It helped to give a grand appearance to the Zimmerman Hardware Store.  It is said to have be designed by the Art Institute of Chicago.

Access to the Collection

BECHS Artifact collection is a “closed” collection, only because we are unable to give you same day access.  In considering requests for access, BECHS must balance competing considerations such as the need to safeguard the collection and other demands on the staff.  While every effort is made to accommodate all reasonable requests, projects for study must be specific and visitors will limit themselves to the material requested.  Casual browsing and impromptu requests cannot be accommodated.
The guidelines for access have been developed to facilitate the use of collections while maintaining the safety and security of the Society’s irreplaceable objects. For inquiries about access to BECHS’s artifact collection, please email
