The tintype process was invented in 1853. Tintypes were extremely popular among Civil War soldiers, who loved to have their pictures taken in uniform to send back home.

Tiny 'gem' tintypes about 1-inch by 1-inch" were made starting in 1863. These were often sold in bunches and put in albums like this one belonging to Amos Messer
