Patriotism was prime in 1944, with area residents seeking ways to honor local members of the United States armed forces. Probably the most lasting memento of this was the beautification of the new Highway 22 from Mankato to Mapleton.. Today it still has no billboards but most of its “living tribute of trees and shrubs” still grace the Victory Highway.
